Data Science Vs Digital Marketing

Data Science and Digital Marketing altogether both are different fields:

Digital Marketing is a Marketing domain where we promote, sale and provide services to our products in Online Mode whereas Data Science is a field where we study Data we collected through various modes and study the pattern in it and do a Prediction about what will happen next.

(Note — Data Science can be used in Digital Marketing to study Data)

Honestly, both have no relation if you want to pursue a career. But as a course, if you want to study it totally depends on what you want to pursue as both are totally different fields.

Firstly we will discuss Digital Marketing Field :

Digital Marketing is a part of Marketing where you increase your brand value (Branding) and publish your products online by using different boosting techniques. Final conclusion is to maximize your sell or profit through online mode and reach to consumers and display them about your brand.

Digital Marketing Topics :

In Digital Marketing you have to study the below topics :

  1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

2. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

3. Google Ads

4. Social Media Advertisements

5. Social Media Marketing

6. Content Creation and Content Curation

7. Email Marketing

8. SMS and Whatsapp Marketing

9. Content Management System

10. Blog Writing

11. Online Reputation Management

12. Website Creation and Design

13. Graphic Design and so on…

I guess it's very easy to study all these concepts and understand but required more time to excel in each topic as it required lots of practice.

Technical Skills

  • Programming — A basic understanding of HTML, CSS, WordPress, (For Website Designing and SEO) required.
  • Graphic Design — Understanding of Graphics Tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc. tool for Graphic Design. (Many times companies has a team of Graphic Designer who does these tasks)
  • MS- OFFICE — Understanding of Excel, Powerpoint, Word
  • Internet Literacy — Must know how to use the Internet and use browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc required.

Non-Technical Skills

Most of the personal skills possessed by an individual are categorized under the non-technical section. They are:

  • Marketing Concepts and Knowledge in-depth
  • Sales Knowledge
  • Good Writing and Reading Skills
  • Strong business sense
  • Communication skills

Data Science Topics :

Data Science is totally a different field from Digital Marketing where you have to do lots of…lots of studies and require to achieve a subject matter expert.

Data Science

In Data Science you have to study the below topics :

  1. Statistics
  2. Linear Algebra
  3. Calculus and Mathematics
  4. Programming Language such as Python or R, SQL, No SQL
  5. Big Data, Hadoop and MongoDB
  6. Databases
  7. Data Visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Data Studio & so on…
  8. Cloud Services such as Azure, AWS, etc.
  9. Cloud Computing
  10. Machine Learning
  11. Deep Learning
  12. Web Development languages such as HTML, CSS, Flask, Django & so on…

Other than that no one tells us Data Science requires Domain knowledge in any one of the field i.e. Industrial Knowledge of Marketing, Finance, Ecommerce, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, etc.

(You have to choose any one field and expert in it that's where companies are mostly seeking for Masters or PhD in any field).

Technical Skills

You must be excellent in Mathematics, Computer Programming, and Statistics to be a successful data scientist.

Other technical skills needed are:

  • Programming — Proficiency in computer programming and coding languages
  • Analytical tools knowledge — SAS, HADOOP, Spark, and R, are the popular analytical tools, used by the data scientists
  • Unstructured Data Workability — Ability to manage unstructured data received from different channels

Non-Technical Skills

  • Data intuition

Timeline to study :

(Patience is a Virtue)

  • Digital Marketing takes around 6–8 months to study.
  • Data Science takes around 1-2 years minimum of study (As we to cover a lot of topics and develop many practical models to showcase your talent to get a job in this field.

(This depends on the person and how much he study and both Data Science and Digital Marketing required lots of practice and which make you expert in it)

Don’t Fall Prey to any attractive advertisements about the courses provided by Coaching Classes :

(Mostly Online Advertisements)

Data Science Advertisements:

Most important don’t fall prey on any kind of advertisements from any Tutions or Classes as they approach you and tell you it's easy to learn Data Science in 3 or 6 Months you will get expert in it which is totally wrong. It's the way to earn money from students who fall prey to such type of gimmicks. Believe me, it will require a lot of time and patience and hard work and a lot of studies to become a Data Scientist. (Job Guarantee after the course is another fascinating thing Advertisement show which is wrong).

Generally, the company is looking for a person who as a Masters Degree or PhD at least 2–3 years of experience in a relevant field. (High Paying jobs).

Look for a piece of advice or check its authenticity.

Digital Marketing Advertisements:

In Digital Marketing also the same thing will happen but comparatively it is very easy to understand and get a job also. (Starting Salary is low and it gradually increases with time).

How to decide which field is suitable for us?

It totally depends on person to person and what you want to achieve in your career.

Digital Marketing as Career:

I would say it's very easy to get into this field as so much content is available and you will get a lot of guidance from many peers to excel in this field. Anyone from any domain can easily switch into this field after doing some courses Online or Offline mode whatever suits you. As many candidates from Engineering, Commerce, Arts, Science, Diploma holders, 12th Pass and 10th Pass, etc background are getting into this field and doing jobs and earning hefty salaries.

But as I say it totally depends on the person what he wants to achieve in his career. Also, depending on the field he loves most as if that Person loves Sales and Marketing as a field especially Social Media Marketing, Website Creation, Online Product Selling and so on then they can pursue their career in Digital Marketing. Also, Candidates who loves Branding a Product and showcasing it online and generate revenue for the respective company they work then its a good choice. Online Media is also an Option.

Salary Range for Digital Marketing :

The average salary for a Digital Marketing beginner level / fresher is about Rs 3.0 Lacs to 4.0 Lacs per annum. This will depend on various other factors like skills, organization, and city of work.

Data Science as a Career :

Data Science

Data Science is a vast and little bit difficult field comparatively Digital Marketing if you are not from Statistics or Computer Science domain.

Generally, it's difficult to get a job in Data Science as the criteria required or set by companies are too high.

I always say it totally depends on Person can overcome such barrier and excel in Data Science field. (With a lot of hard work in 1- 2 years you can become an expert and get a good job as well).

You can always start your journey as a Data Analyst or Database Manager. (Engineers or Statistics Masters can become Data Scientist easily than others).

An entry-level data scientist can earn around ₹500,000 per annum with less than one year of experience. Early level data scientists with 1 to 4 years of experience get around ₹610,811 per annum. A mid-level data scientist with 5 to 9 years of experience earns ₹1,004,082 per annum in India.

Freelancing is always an option :

In both Digital Marketing as well as Data Science you can do Freelancing and earn some money out of it.

Comparison between Digital Marketing Vs Data Science:

  • Digital Marketing is less difficult than Data Science compare with studies and Jobs.
  • Anyone can easily learn both Online as well as Offline.
  • Online you can learn both from YouTube, Udemy, Coursera, so on...
  • Also read blogs about it online on Quora, Medium, or any website.

In both field, as you move you get experience and along with the time you become a Subject Matter Expert.

Finally, both the fields of Digital Marketing as well as Data Science are different but at the same time challenging and required hard work to achieve excellence. Its a matter of choice and interest area of yours.

Don’t go with the flow but follow your heart or instinct. (Advertisements are really manipulative at a times and confuse you with their Marketing gimmick like more jobs are available for Data Scientist or Digital Marketing or something like a best 21st-century job and blah blah…don’t go with that as your money and time both are invested in that. So choose wisely)
